I’m not a dark chocolate lover. I’ll take a sweet, creamy piece of milk any day. I’d rather not waste my calories on the dark. I know, I’m the odd man out but I can’t help it. The dark is just too bitter for me. I will even go as far as to say that I don’t care to eat chocolate chips without something to buffer them. I have come around a tiny bit and can handle a little dark if it isn’t too abrasive, especially if paired with wine, fruit, or something to compliment the flavors. Even when I dip chocolates, I mix the milk and dark evenly for a smoother flavor. That said, I didn’t hold out much hope for this beer. Generally the chocolate ones are just overdone for me between the bitter chocolate and the hops.
Mister handed me the snifter of Atwater’s Decadent Dark Chocolate Ale and it looked like someone had poured chocolate chips in a glass. It was the perfect color, dark and rich.
The nose on this beer is incredible. You can smell the chocolate and sweetness. Mister said it was like smelling a bag of chocolate chips. He was right.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this beer. It wasn’t bitter at all. Amazingly, the chocolate flavor was prominent but not overdone. The flavors blended quite well and weren’t harsh or biting. I didn’t end up with the “nasty bitter beer taste” in the back of my throat. It was smooth and creamy and stayed on the palate the perfect amount of time. I can see a bonfire in the back yard and a 6-pack of this in the cooler. I certainly wouldn’t call it a dessert beer because it’s very easy to drink. I don’t think you can pick a wrong food to pair with beer. If I had to pick a perfect food for this one, I’d go with something a bit stronger in flavor like a marinated and grilled lamb chop, sausage and peppers, or a cheese and meat plate. It would compliment hot and spicy food in a beautiful way, think Mexican. Then again, I’m thinking beer float. I can’t imagine what a good vanilla ice cream would do for the already creamy ale. Heaven any way you look at it!
This is a good beer to work into a recipe. Chocolate beer cupcakes with vanilla bean frosting? We’ll see…
