Great Divide Brewing Co. Hoss Rye Lager

We’re having beer two nights in a row.  It’s a record.

I had to pick again tonight and I used the same method as last night – run to the garage and grab.

I picked another winner.  Great Divide Brewing Co.’s Hoss Rye Lager poured a beautiful light amber and appeared to be unfiltered but cleared some as it settled.

It was not nearly as bitter as I would expect for a rye.  It’s hoppy on the nose but malty on the tongue.  I thought it tasted a bit sweet.  Mister just liked it.  Yesterday’s oreo cookie cheesecakes complimented it nicely, too.

Cheers!

Founders Red’s Rye Pale Ale

Mister and I splurged tonight and we each got our own bottle.  He decided on Founders Red’s Rye PA.  Despite the fact that it’s 70 IBU, I’d tried it before and knew I didn’t like it.  Neither did Mister.

In the bottle, it smelled  like ginger and pineapple.  Trust me, it didn’t taste like it.  It’s a very heavy, bitter beer.  If that’s your style, this is all you!

Cheers!

Arcadia Ales Sky High Rye

Hello Saturday.  Mister and I took Little bug to the Children’s Museum today.  We had a great time – so much so that she had a meltdown when we had to leave.  On the bright side, we took her to our favorite local BBQ place.  Little Bug loves their food and the owners, Homeboy and Homegirl.  Give her a piece of cornbread and she’s a happy girl.

Arcadia Ales Sky High Rye is a light pale ale brewed with barley and rye malts.  It’s a 55 on the IBU so I was skeptical.

It poured a beautiful gold and smelled sweet with floral and citrus.  It’s a unique taste.  The citrus hits you right up front and the sweetness is right behind it.  The hops are strong but not abrasive.  I will say it is at the edge of bitterness for me.  Mister really likes it and thinks he could drink a lot of it.  Me, well I’m not so sure.

I don’t mind the initial taste in my mouth.  It’s the bitterness that develops as it sits in the mouth.  While I did finish my glass (remember it’s half a bottle), I won’t be running out for more.

Cheers!

O’Fallon Hemp Hop Rye

So Mister declared that tonight’s Hopslam was dinner and this was a snack.  I’ve learned that when my man of few words speaks, I listen.  Then again, he’s giving me a snifter full of beautiful red-gold nectar.  O’Fallon’s Hemp Hop Rye didn’t let us down.

To quote Mister, “Sometimes learning to love beer is like riding a horse.  Sometimes you fall off when you find a beer you don’t like.  You just have to get back on and  find one you like.”

“That’s rich and deep.  One flavor fades away and others come through.  There’s something on the back end – it’s not bitter so it must be the hemp.  There’s a toasted oat flavor there, too.”  I can’t say it better.  At less than 1/2 of the IBU  (25 for this one), less than 1/2 the calories, and nearly 1/2 the ABV  of Bell’s Hopslam, this is a much easier drinking beer.  It would be a great campfire beer in the fall.  I’d be HAPPY to test that one out when the nights get cool again this fall.  Mister and I certainly won’t have a problem finishing 5 more of these.

Cheers!
